Where Communication Is:
Related to the Development of the Child
- In the Toronto District School Board, collaboration with staff from the Parenting and Family Literacy Centre for the purpose of project planning and data analysis brought additional expertise to the board team. When the board shared findings and key recommendations from these centres to families through newsletters and parenting workshops, parents were better able to support their children at home. - The speech and language department in Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board developed a pamphlet outlining the important aspects of the Phonological Awareness and Interventions Strategies process used with junior kindergarten students. This pamphlet assists parents in understanding the components of phonological structures and their role in guiding their child. [Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board Final Report]
- Halton District School Board recognized that by informing parents about the inquiry process that occurred in purposeful, play-based learning in the classroom, participation and interest levels consequently increased in the home. For example, this was evidenced by e-mail communication between a parent and teacher in which instructions for purposeful play activities at home were requested. - Evidence-informed assessment and intervention strategies are described at various community learning networks throughout the Toronto and Area Region (e.g., Our Kids Network (Halton Catholic District School Board, Halton District School Board); Success by Six Peel (Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, Peel District School Board); and the Dufferin Coalition for Kids (Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, Upper Grand District School Board).
