Assessment and Intervention/Use of Data Strategies are:
Monitored and Tracked
- In Waterloo Catholic District School Board, the Web Based Teaching Tool (WBTT) was used in junior kindergarten-grade one, with a focus on using the WBTT Math Screen to monitor and track student progress. Pilot group participants received instruction about the use of the WBTT strategy database. All students were screened and intervention was provided to students flagged as being at risk in early mathematics skills and concepts. Special education teachers used the WBTT database to provide intervention support for students with special education needs. Students identified as at risk were re-screened to monitor their response to the program. [Waterloo Catholic District School Board Final Report]
- Junior kindergarten and grade one classroom teachers, resource teachers, and the speech and language department in Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board worked together to implement an inclusive classroom approach to phonological awareness. The program includes: screening of all JK students regarding basic phonological processes in the fall by the speech and language department; classroom implementation of an eight week "Phonological Tool Kit" designed to teach phonological skills, while monitoring students flagged from the initial screening; referral of students requiring more intensive intervention to the classroom resource teacher for further intervention and assessment, with testing completed by either the speech and language department or the classroom resource teacher. - York Region has been working on oral language development for five years and has data and clear evidence to support the tools and strategies being used. There has been significant improvement in student achievement in oral language as a result. There is evidence from teacher experience, from administrators, and from EQAO testing because the first students who were in the pilot program five years ago have made significant gains in EQAO results.
